What if the field you sell today could plant seeds of eternal treasure tomorrow? In Matthew 13:44, Jesus says, “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.”

Did you grow up among Christians who said, “Don’t drink, smoke, chew, or go with folks who do”? Lots of churches had “lists” of what to avoid and definitions of worldliness that might include things like playing cards, dancing, and shopping on Sundays.

You Can’t Take It with You was a Pulitzer Prize–winning 1936 comedic play by George Kaufman and Moss Hart that became an Academy Award–winning movie in 1938. It is about a highly eccentric extended family whose curious members involve themselves in any number of complicated situations.

John MacArthur once said, "Everything we have is on loan from the Lord, entrusted to us for awhile." The Bible teaches that God is the Creator and Owner of everything—from mountains to the smallest creatures.

Many Christians see ministry roles as more spiritual than business or everyday work. But is that a biblical view?

Is it more spiritual to give to a church than to invest in business? Is it more “holy” to be a pastor than a business person? Is God really concerned about physical and economic needs? The word ‘football’ has a different meaning to Americans versus the vast majority of people around the globe. Football is the biggest sport in the world, the one with a ball which you kick with your feet. Americans call it soccer. 

Communism has been tried and it was dehumanizing, and the socialist countries did not produce flourishing societies. Why? It limited human freedom, also in the marketplace, and thus trampled on human dignity.

Traditional financial advising and retirement planning have focused on diversified portfolios, mainly in public securities that minimize risk while maximizing return (profit). This over-emphasis on return has inherently ignored whether or not companies have good products or good practices that align to God’s Character and advance His Kingdom.

Have you ever had a week where afterwards you stepped back and just said, “WOW, God… You are amazing!” In an amazing way… over this last week I was able to see this so clearly on display. I was able to see faith-driven businesses taking the gospel to unreached people groups seeing the good news of Jesus Christ go forth geographically.

What if circumstances are such that not taking a risk will result in loss and injury? In that situation, it may not be wise to play it safe. What if the successful outcome of a risky situation would bring great benefit to many people and its failure would bring harm only to yourself? Then what would love do? It may not be loving to choose the comfort of security when something great may be achieved for the cause of God and for the good of others.
